The company was originally founded by Mike Brown and Derek Illman, who established a strong reputation for quality engineering and reliability through their work across multiple sectors.

Working together from 1989 in Sunderland, Mike and Derek secured contracts with organisations such as Asda, Grove Cranes, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, the University of Sunderland, and various local councils.

In 2007, the company expanded with the addition of Adam Illman as a Commissioning and Service Engineer. Sarah Brown joined in 2018 as a Software Engineer, progressing to Project Engineer in 2019. Jack Sumner joined the company in 2019 as Software Engineer, progressing to Project Engineer in 2024. Giancarlo Maccio joined as Service and Commissioning Engineer in 2025.

Following a staged retirement of the original founders between 2024 and 2026, the business transitioned to new leadership under Adam Illman and Sarah Brown.

Today, North East Controls continues to deliver BEMS projects across a range of sectors, with particular expertise in the Healthcare and Life Sciences industries.
